The tragic death of the young veterinarian, Dr. Ben Cuneen, from Redlands Veterinary Clinic has left everyone worried and wondering about Hendra Virus. It has been a horrendous time for the family of Ben and staff of the clinic and our thoughts are with them. Both Redland Bay and Proserpine, which were under quarantine, are now clear, but many questions remain.
The show season has gone into real swing now after EI. Even though later than usual nominations have been very good and hopefully they will stay that way.
A possible case of EI has raised its head at Eastern Creek again and all we can do is wait for test results and hope it doesn’t hit us again.
Congratulations go to the winners of the Winderadeen Quarter Horses sponsored $20,000 NPHA 2 Y O Western Pleasure Futurity. Carolyn Johnson riding RRD Somethin To Cee took all the accolades for owners, B & D Sim, who are no doubt ecstatic. A report and full pictorial will appear in the next issue.
The EADRA levy has created a flurry in the industry and everyone should read our story on page 16 to learn how it will affect them. Andrew Deacon, President of the QHC, attended Parliament on member’s behalf on the 24/9/08 and the findings are at the end of the article.
Things are changing in the magazine business too, with the resignation of Tara the AQHA’s magazine co-ordinator. She has done a great job and been a delight to work with over the years and I wish her well. Dave Christensen will be filling Tara’s boots – not bad for retirement Dave. You can still look forward to Dave’s reports in the APH. He has also taken over the Cutting Column and it’s now Cutting Gossip – 1st installment in this issue.
Talking about Dave – he just returned after a week’s fishing up north and won a section of the competition. He also told me of the fish that broke his rod and got away - but he does have a photo to prove it.
Breeders have a smorgasbord of sires in all disciplines to choose from this season so I’d say the 2009 foaling season will have adequate progeny for everyone to choose from.
All eyes are on the NCHA Futurity, the first show to be held in the new indoor arena at Tamworth, and by the time you read this no doubt there will have been many post mortems discussed. According to Dave Christensen the venue is outstanding so happy competing.
